Freedom?! It’s been a long time since the motor car evoked any association with the term freedom. Rather with obligations: car tax, insurance, maintenance, repairs … Volvo wants to change all that with its new SUV XC40. The Swedes want to raise our understanding of ownership and obligations to a new level with their service “Care by Volvo”.
Anyone wanting to call one of the new models their own, can conclude an innovative contract of use, and for a fixed monthly rate, they will receive the complete service package, comparable to a mobile phone contract, for example. Because after 24 months, you get a new car. All costs are included except for refuelling and the car wash, and Volvo even supply a rental car while yours is being repaired. The idea of freedom also includes keeping the barriers to car sharing as low as possible. The car comes with a digital key that can be shared without problem.
Expensive worry-free package
“With “Care by Volvo”, Volvo Cars is presenting the mobility model for the present day”, says Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of the Volvo Car Group. “While customers are already familiar with flat rates and all-inclusive subscriptions for a wide variety of services, buying a car is still a very complicated process.” The “Care by Volvo” offer is exclusively for the XC40.
Initially, the model will be available with petrol or diesel engines but its design is flexible enough to enable it to be supplied as an electric car in the future. “For our customers, time is a luxury, and this service will enable us to give them more free time in their everyday lives, thereby making life a little easier”, explains Thomas Andersson, Vice President “Care by Volvo” at Volvo Cars. The only catch to the enticing worry-free package is the price: At 699 euros a month, some users may lose their feeling of freedom.
